Your generosity and that of local businesses has allowed us to change the park considerably and soon we’ll add a new playground, splashpad, and renovate the basketball court. However, we still need to fund the walking trail, tennis court renovations, and a new open pavilion. So, save your coins (we will even take checks and cash!) over the next four weeks and we will have 2nd Annual Coin Drive on September 25 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon!
Paver Push and 2nd Annual Coin Drive for Jaycee Park
Paver Push, now until September 25
The personalized pavers (bricks) are now our priority as they will be placed in a seating plaza near the splashpad and playground. With as much accuracy as possible, we need to let Houston Parks Board know how many pavers and the sizes our neighborhoods and surrounding businesses want in our park so we can help fund and plan the seating plaza. So, we are having a Paver Push from now until September 25 . Plan your paver sponsorship now and order on or by September 25. See attached form.
There are 4 ways to order your personalized paver for Jaycee Park*:
- Go to www.houstonparksboard.org, Click “Donate Now,” and follow the instructions. In the write-in box be sure to say your donation is for a paver (see the inscription restrictions that are explained in the attached paver flyer).
- Print and Mail your sponsorship via the attached flyer/order form with a check made payable to the Houston Parks Board.
- I can pick up your order form and check, contact me at friendsofjayceepark@yahoo.com or call (713) 922-6742.
- Give your paver form and check to the Coin Drive volunteer or bring by Jaycee Park on September 25 from 9:30am-1pm during the Coin Drive to benefit Jaycee Park.

2nd Annual Coin Drive, September 25 – We need your help!!
Your generosity and that of local businesses has allowed us to change the park considerably and soon we’ll add a new playground, splashpad, and renovate the basketball court. However, we still need to fund the walking trail, tennis court renovations, and a new open pavilion. So, save your coins (we will even take checks and cash!) over the next four weeks and we will have 2nd Annual Coin Drive on September 25 from 10:00 a.m. until Noon!
We need your help on September 25 between 10:00 a.m. and Noon to go door to door collecting your neighbor’s coin and/ or paver donations. Please let us know which circled street number (see attached maps) you are volunteering for. If you are open to collect in any area, we are grateful for that too.
Since the coin collection may involve dollars, checks, and paver orders with checks, we need residents and/or block captains to do the actual coin collection. Neighbors will be more comfortable giving their donations/orders to fellow neighbors. Plus, you won’t want to miss the Waterslide After Party at Jaycee Park!
A flyer announcing the Coin Drive will be delivered to your door the weekend before the Coin Drive (Sept 18, 19) by the youth groups from Lazybrook Baptist Church and Lamar High School National Honor Society. This year, Jennifer Taylor, Realtor for Keller Williams, is sponsoring a ‘Waterslide After Party’ at Jaycee Park for the community and volunteers. Many thanks to the two youth groups and Jennifer Taylor. Their help goes a long way in making a big difference.
Darlene Wayt has volunteered to help coordinate all the volunteers for this Coin Drive. Thank you very much for this, Darlene!

Thanks to an allocation from Houston Parks a Recreation Department and CM Stardig (Thanks HPARD and CM Brenda Stardig!), we will be able to build a new playground at Jaycee Park. It will be bigger and with much more variety (and no rust!). The splashpad and playground will become a reality the spring of 2011. Installation plans are being made and finalized now by the Houston Parks Board. We have come a very long way in improving this park! Thanks for donating, volunteering and coming to events. Your efforts have made a huge difference.

National Night Out 2010 and Back to School Information
Where has the summer gone? School is just around the corner (this is where everyone hears thousands of Mothers start to cheer!) As a result of the fast approaching school year I have attached an informational packet concerning “Back to School safety”. Please forward it along to all the residents in your neighborhood. It is very informative and could be of great use!
It is also time to start to coordinate our National Night Out (NNO) 2010 parties again (this is where all the crooks start to boooooo). Please have your NNO chairman contact me so that we can start to coordinate the parties. This year National Night Out (NNO) is on Tuesday, October 5th.
Our City of Houston NNO coordinator has asked for us to come up with something special to do for our National Night Out parties. I would like to once again collect non-perishable foods to donate to the Houston Food Bank. This would allow us all to assist those less fortunate than ourselves during these tough economic times. Lets try to make a difference in their lives! Here is a link to the Houston Food Bank ttp://www.houstonfoodbank.org .

5th Friday Social
Come and say hello to your neighbors. Each month containing 5 Fridays we host a meet and greet at our home for all Lazybrook residents on the 5th Friday of the month.
In the 1960’s when our neighborhood began, impromptu social gatherings were the norm. Families got together for no reason other than saying hey and catching up. The Hooper House driveway was active most Fridays. 50 years later we are in a fast paced world and we have to actively seek our neighbor’s company.
The past gatherings have been full and fun. We have some very colorful folks in Lazybrook. If you aren’t coming you are missed. Come help us get to know the new neighbors, visit with the original neighbors and hear about what’s up on the different blocks.
5th Friday social for July will be hosted at 2222 Lazybrook Dr. by Sherri Oldham and Birgitt Haderlein. Eddie Yarborough has volunteered to help since this is our first shot at it.
Who: Lazybrook Residents and families
What: Dinner will be provided
(Bring a small dessert or bottle of wine and
your TO GO bags for the many desserts left over)
When: July 30, 5:00PM – 8:00PM
Where: Sherri Oldham and Birgitt Haderlein’s home
2222 Lazybrook @ Millwood
Why: Why live in a neighborhood where you don’t
know you neighbors? Come say hello!
No unattended minors. No pets. No RSVP required.
Central Division PIP Meeting
Citizens and Police … Friendship Through Education
The Houston Police Department has had a Community Service Division since the Seventies. When a group of citizens requested a presentation on a crime prevention topic, they would send one of their officers to the group and advise them what they could do to keep from becoming crime victims again. This is proactive policing. In 1982, out of the patrol division came the idea that citizens also need to know more about their police department before a crime occurred in their neighborhood. From this idea came the concept of the Positive Interaction Program, “PIP.”
At the July 28th PIP meeting, the Burglary and Theft Division of the Houston Police Department will giving us a presentation.

Tips for Walking Around
My name is Birgitt Haderlein, president of To Fit You. I do wellness coaching and personal training. I am excited to do my first article for the Lazybrook newsletter. It was great to see everyone at the last civic club meeting. I really want our community to be healthier and happier by spreading the word to as many of you as I can. I hope I was able to inspire some of you to start an exercise program. For those of you who were not able to make it, we went over exercises and stretches for some of those very important muscles. You know, the ones that help you get up off the chair and out of the house.
If you’re not predisposed to participating in strenuous athletic activity, thank goodness for a walking program. It has finally been recognized as an exercise that has come into it’s own. Research has shown that even slow walking offers health benefits. But if you are trying to lose weight you will need to do more than a leisurely stroll. You will need to challenge your heart and lungs to a point where your breathing is labored but you’re not out of breath.
There are 4 good reasons to start a walking program.
1. It is easy to get started and you can do it anywhere and anytime of the day
2. Burns calories and helps you manage your weight
3. Improves circulation, tones muscles and strengthens bones
4. Improves Happiness quotient
Not only does fitness walking do good things for your body; it’s great for your mind, too, according to Prevention’s Practical Encyclopedia of Walking for Health. Research has shown
that walking boosts mental performance, improves psychological well-being and enables you to solve problems, manage stress and reduce anxiety. Just think of walking as your personal therapist.
Walking Techniques
Proper walking posture allows your body to move smoothly and efficiently.
• Walk “proud” with your head up and eyes focused ahead.
• Keep your shoulders level, pulled back and down
• Lift your chest and contract your abdominal muscles, pressing them toward your spine.
Proper technique will help you walk longer and stronger. According to the Reebok Bodywalksm program, you should
apply these guidelines at each step:
1. Touch the ground heel first
2. Roll forward through the arch, over the ball of your foot to your toes, which push off to start another step.
3. Carry your arms at 90 degree angles, and pump them forward and back rather than side to side.
Go early or later in the day when it is cooler. Drink plenty of fluids. If you’re something of a procrastinator, call a friend or a neighbor to go with you. If you won’t do it for yourself you might do it because someone else is holding you accountable.
Look for me in the neighborhood, I walk twice a day, sometimes with dogs and occasionally with my new friend Vic. If you see me and have a question, please feel free to stop me and ask.
